German Language Practice vs Duolingo
These are not really competitors — they solve different problems. Duolingo teaches you German in small daily doses. We prepare you for a specific certification exam: telc or Goethe, on a clock, with listening audio played twice and a written letter graded on register. A 500-day streak has never told anyone whether they would pass B1.
Sound familiar?
- You have months of streaks and still no idea what level you are at.
- The exam format — timed modules, answer sheets, one replay of the audio — never appears in the app.
- Duolingo audio is slow and studio-clean; exam listening is not.
- There is no answer key that says "you scored 62% on Hören".

What Duolingo does well
Duolingo is the best habit-builder in language learning. It is free, it is fun, and if it keeps you doing five minutes of German every day, it is doing something no mock exam can.

Our honest verdict
Use both. Keep Duolingo for daily vocabulary and habit, and add our mock exams in the six to eight weeks before your test date. If you only have money and time for one and you have an exam booked, the mock exams are the one that changes your result.

Frequently asked questions
+Can Duolingo get me to B1?
It can build a lot of the vocabulary and grammar you need, but it does not certify you and it does not train the exam skills. You still have to sit telc, Goethe or ÖSD for a recognised certificate.
+Is the Duolingo German Test accepted in Germany?
The Duolingo English Test is accepted by some universities for English. For German immigration and residency purposes, authorities expect telc, Goethe, ÖSD or TestDaF certificates.
+Should I stop using Duolingo?
No. Just do not mistake it for exam preparation. Vocabulary in the app, format and timing with the mock exams.
