telc A1 Mock Exams: What the Paper Contains and How to Prepare

Before anything else, one fact that saves a lot of confusion: telc Deutsch A1 and Goethe-Zertifikat A1 are the same exam. Start Deutsch 1 is a jointly developed paper. Same sections, same number of items, same timings, same task types. If you have been trying to work out which one is easier, you can stop — the choice is about test centres and dates, not difficulty.

What is in the paper

The written paper is 65 minutes of work across three sections and 30 objectively marked items. That is a small enough paper that a handful of avoidable mistakes moves your result meaningfully — which is exactly why format familiarity pays off more at A1 than at any higher level.

The four things that cost beginners marks

1. Assuming every item has three options

At A1 the Richtig/Falsch items give you two options and the multiple choice items give you two or three depending on the Teil. Both Lesen Teil 1 and Lesen Teil 3 are Richtig/Falsch. Candidates who have drilled three-option questions sometimes look for an option that is not on the page.

2. Treating Hören as one skill

The three listening Teile are not the same task at different difficulties. Teil 1 has six items, Teil 2 has four, Teil 3 has five, and they present material differently. Practising “A1 listening” in general is much less useful than practising the three specific Teile.

3. Running the Schreiben clock down on task 1

Twenty minutes, two tasks. The first is typically a short form-filling task and the second a short message. The form task is worth doing quickly and accurately — it rewards precision, not effort — and the time you save goes into the message, which is where you can actually demonstrate range.

4. Not practising Sprechen out loud

The speaking test is three Teile, roughly 15 minutes, taken with other candidates rather than alone. Reading the task types silently does not prepare you for producing German at conversational speed in a room with strangers. This is the section people most often under-prepare because it is the hardest to practise alone.

A realistic four-week approach

1. Week 1 — baseline. Sit one complete written paper, timed, in one sitting. Do not study first. The point is to find out what you do not know about the format, and studying first hides that.
2. Week 2 — fix what the baseline exposed. Sort your wrong answers into “did not know the German” and “did not know the task.” The second group is far quicker to fix and usually larger than people expect.
3. Week 3 — sections under time pressure. Lesen in 25 minutes, Hören without replaying anything, Schreiben in 20. Individually, repeatedly.
4. Week 4 — full paper again, plus speaking. One complete timed paper to confirm the improvement, and as much spoken practice as you can arrange with an actual person.

This is the most common search behind this article, so it is worth being direct about it. A PDF plus a separate answer key gives you a score. What it does not give you is why a distractor was designed to catch you, or which of your errors were pacing rather than knowledge — and at A1, where the paper is short, that distinction is most of the useful signal.
